Clean Water Program Journal Article: Optimal Selection and Placement of Green Infrastructure in Urban Watersheds for PCB Control

Green infrastructure, such as permeable pavement, rain gardens, tree-well planters, and bioswales, can provide cost-effective, resilient approaches to managing stormwater at its source while delivering environmental, social, and economic benefits. In January Dr. Jing Wu and several colleagues from SFEI published an article in the Journal of Sustainable Water in the Built Environment describing the development and application of GreenPlan-IT, a versatile toolset that helps municipalities decide on placement of green infrastructure in the landscape and track the effectiveness of these installations. The results show that optimized solutions can be as much as 30% better in terms of load reduction and can save hundreds of millions of dollars.
