Green chemistry is a critical tool in efforts to prevent the pollution of our environment. By selecting safer chemicals for making consumer products, we limit contamination that can harm the Bay and other aquatic ecosystems.

SFEI senior scientist Dr. Rebecca Sutton, appointed in 2014 to the Green Ribbon Science Panel that advises California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control on its Safer Consumer Products green chemistry effort, attended the agency’s advisory meeting in April of this year. She provided guidance on a variety of technical topics, such as evaluating the ecological impacts of chemical mixtures. SFEI provides applied science that policymakers and managers need to make well-informed decisions in the effort to guide manufacturers towards safer choices.
