The State of the Bay report provides independent, science-based reporting on the state of the health of the San Francisco Estuary ecosystem.

The State of the Bay report is produced jointly by SFEI, the San Francisco Estuary Partnership, Center for Ecosystem Management and Restoration, the Point Reyes Bird Observatory, and The Bay Institute. The four objectives for the State of the Bay report include:

  1. To assess the state of the San Francisco Estuary ecosystem based on indicators that are scientifically credible, using high-quality available data and transparent, sophisticated methods
  2. To synthesize and present the findings in a manner that is easily understood by the public and accessible to the mainstream media
  3. To serve as a model for ongoing, periodic reporting on the ecological condition of the San Francisco Estuary
  4. To allow the San Francisco Estuary Partnership to evaluate progress towards its restoration goals
